Body awareness in dogs

Why is it important for our dogs to have body awareness? It depends on the dog! Large breeds need body awareness to not only correctly move their giant frames in the ways they want to, but also to avoid knocking over vases, navigating coffee tables, and understanding where they can and can not fit. Smaller dogs also need to ensure they have body awareness which allows them to avoid injury, stay safe, and know what areas they can safely get in and out of, which goes for our giant friends too!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Body awareness can be trained in many different ways. One of my favourite is to implement parts of the environment to encourage lateral thinking and bring consciousness to areas of the body that may not be normally used in every day life. Tree logs, branches, child free playgrounds are all wonderful tools we can use to start training body awareness. If we don’t have these things available, simply teaching your dog a back command - asking them to walk backwards - is a great way for them to begin to acknowledge and become conscious of their rear end
