Click to Calm

When working with reactive or anxious dogs it is very important to provide expectations, to guide your fur friend to what you want from them, not just what you don’t want. Through implementing clicker training for an anxious or reactive dog you can communicate a clear expectation for a safe and healthy behaviour. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Click to Calm is an exceptional text by Emma Parsons which provides recipes to work with your reactive dog using clicker training. One of my favourite recipes is clicking for the absence of reactive behaviour. By taking your dog to a safe place, a significant distance away from their trigger, and rewarding any and all behaviour that is desired (looking away from the trigger, doing tricks, or simply being calm) you can reward and inform your dog of the expectation that is not correcting reactivity or anxiety.
